Last month, when I attended my first BlogHer conference (recap coming soon!), I was able to attend an exclusive screening of ‘Girls Trip.’ And finally, one of the most anticipated films of the summer is finally here!
Starring Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Regina Hall and break out comedienne, Tiffany Haddish, the ladies known as the “Flossy Posse” take a college reunion trip of a lifetime to New Orleans for Essence Fest!
Meet the ‘Flossy Posse:’
- Ryan, (played by Regina Hall) is a best selling author who is invited to give a keynote speech at Essence Fest alongside with her football star husband Stuart (played by Mike Coulter) and together they are a power couple who focuses on how to maintain love and relationships. Ryan has to save face for her fans and the media and pretend her marriage is perfect.
- Sasha (played by Queen Latifah) is a gossip writer who has secretly fallen on hard times after a failed business venture with Ryan but does her best to hide it during their trip to New Orleans.
- Lisa (played by Jada Pinkett-Smith) is a homely, single mother of two who’s reluctant to find herself and let loose after getting divorced.
- Dina (played by Tiffany Haddish) is the crazy, outgoing girlfriend that every girl should have! She’s gritty, keeps it real and is a ride-or-die for her girls, especially when it comes to Ryan’s sleazy husband, Stuart.
Other characters in the film include Julian (played by Larenz Tate), an old college buddy of the Flossy Posse and romantic interest for Ryan. Last but not least, the newcomer, Kofi Siriboe, plays Malik, Lisa’s sexy young fling who catches each other’s eyes while cruising down Bourbon Street.
Though ‘Girls Trip’ is fun-filled with tons of laughs, there’s a lot of touching parts in the film where it teaches us about the importance of sisterhood and that it’s okay for Black women to be vulnerable. It also shows we don’t always have strive to be strong all the time, which happens to Ryan and Sasha throughout the film. It’s also perfectly fine to let loose and try something new, which Lisa experiences as a new divorcee and even if you’re a single woman, which Dina personifies, have some fun!!
‘Girls Trip’ is celeb-filled, with memorable scenes from the Bad Boy reunion, Dina (Haddish) dancing with Diddy on stage, the Posse zip lining across Bourbon Street – which hilariously takes a turn for the worse, the grapefruit scene (OMG!) and lastly, the ode to the classic film, “Set it Off,” during the club scene, which was so genius! So grab your favorite girls (don’t forget the popcorn and wine!) and be prepared to get your laugh on, cry and wish you were attending Essence Fest (I know I was!).
Shout out to Malcolm D. Lee (ex. The Best Man, The Best Man Holiday) and Will Packer (ex. This Christmas, Ride Along, Think Like a Man) for directing and producing this film and Kenya Barris (ex. Blackish) for creating this hilarious film and for showing the rich culture of New Orleans! I cannot wait to see this film AGAIN!
Oh, and Tiffany Haddish just gained new fan! She literally stole every scene in this film! Don’t sleep on her!
Thank you to Universal Pictures, Blog Her and SheKnows Media for giving us the opportunity to see this hilarious film! And thanks for the free movie ticket :)!
